Anson, Jay (1977): The Amityville Horror. A True Story. New York City: Bantam.

28 days of terror in a house posessed by evil spirits. In December 1975, the Lutz familiy moved into their dream home, teh same home where Ronald DeFeo had murdered his parents, brothers and sisters just one year earlier. The psychic phenomena that followed created the most terrifying experience the Lutz family had ever encountered, forcing them to flee the house in 28 days, convinced that it was posessed by evil spirits. Their fantastic story, never before disclosed in full detail, makes for an unforgettable book with all the shocks and gripping suspense of The Exorcist, The Omen or Rosemary’s Baby, but with ohne vital difference … the story is true.

Ashford, Jenny (2017): The Unseen Hand – A new exploration of poltergeist phenomena. Scotts Valley: Bleed Red Books.

Rapping on walls. Mysterious rains of stones. Furniture moving around by itself. Phantom voices. Unexplained fires. Insivible assaults. The symptoms of poltergeist activity are well known, but what is a poltergeist, really? Is it some type of demon, or an angry spirit whose only mission is to cause mischief and destruction? Is it the unconscious engery of a troubled living person, somehow affecting the environment from a distance? Or could it all be simply fraud or misidentification? In this comprehensive book, well over one hundred cases of poltergeist acitivity, from the first century to the present day, are summarized and examined. All the best known cases are presented, from Borley Rectory to the Bell Witch, from the Great Amherst Mystery to Gef the Talking Mongoose, from Rosenheim to Tina Resch, from Enfield to the Entity. A large selection of fascinating and lesser known accounts from all over the world are also included, and all contain testemony of the most eerie and extraordinary events. In addition, the book contains in-depth discussions of distinct patterns, stages, and theorized causes of poltergeist phenomena, drawing from some of the best research in parapsychology, neuroscience, and quantum mechanics, as well as a skeptical perspective to provide a grounded overview. The Unseen Hand is the ultimate, one-stop shop for readers interested in poltergeist disturbances throughout the history and the theories behind what causes them.

Brickley, Lee (2021): Leave this House – The frightening true story of the Birmingham Poltergeist. Keine Ortsangabe: unabhängig veröffentlicht.

One of the most violent and intense manifestations of paranormal activity witnessed in the UK for decades, the Birmingham Poltergeist case occured during a single week in 2021 when real-life Ghostbuster and celebrity supernatural expert Lee Brickley began to investigate strange goings-on at a modest family home in Gravelly Hill, Erdington. From the moment Brickley arrived at the property, it was clear something was very, very wrong, and the seasoned ghost hunter knew he had to act fast. This book contains an entire eyewitness account of the terrifying events that would soon unravel. From knives and cutlery flying around the kitchen to a scary-looking old photograph that just couldn’t be destroyed, the family involved in this haunting were subjected to unimaginable levels of torment and cruelty at the hands of the otherworldly entities invading their lives. A mother and father with two young daughters who, through no fault of their own, became embroiled in a battle for their very souls against a malevolent killer from beyond the grave.

Carrington, Hereward & Fodor, Nandor (2010): The Story of the Poltergeist down the centuries. Whitefish: Kessinger Publishing.

Poltergeist phenomena have been observed from the earliest times in all parts of the world. The phenomena are widely distributed and have been abundantly testified to by witnesses. For centuries they were thought to be the work of angry spirits, but the modern explanation, as set forth in this work by two authors who are among the best-known psychical researchers of today, is quite different. Hereward Carrington describes the characteristic features of the poltergeist. A comprehensive collection of 375 poltergeist cases is outlined in date order ranging from A.D. 355 to the present day. Some are very peculiar stories indeed. For instance there is the poltergeist at the home of Rev. Phelps, Connecticut, in 1850, where a great deal of damage was done and in which even children were bodily transported. There is the ‘Jinn’, reported by the son of Lord Denbigh, who produced such items as sums of money, bromide tables and cigarettes when most urgently required! Nandor Fodor takes up the account with the story of the famous Saragossa Ghost of 1934, whose voice came down the chimney and disturbed local government officials. He suggests that the poltergeist is a case for the psychologist – not the physicist – and describes the very peculiar poltergeist in South London in 1938 which was associated with a Mrs Forbes, herself a remarkable character. In this case the poltergeist obligingly produced phenomena at the International Institute of Psychical Research itself! But the two most striking cases on record are the so-called Bell Witch, responsible for savagely persecuting and eventually murdering a Tennesee farmer and apparently associated with the farmer’s daughter Betsy; and the famous talking mongoose, Gef, which haunted a remote house in the Isle of Man and appeared to ’emanate’ from a farmer. These last two are easily the strangest psychic stories ever published. These, and a multitude of other strange phenomena, are outlined in this book and Nandor Fodor knits them together with an unusual and original theory. Is it an inchoate and mindless entity which merely throws things about? Is it a michievous entitiy in some way corresponding to the mind of a naughty child? Or is it some part of an adult personality which has become detached under the stress of some severe psychological strain? Dr Fodor clearly argues all the alternatives and offers a solution which more than any other explains poltergeist phenomena in general and the incredible examples outlined in this book.

Chadbourn, Mark (2014): Testimony. The ultimate proof of life after death, or the most terrifying true story ever told? Poland: Emerald Eye.

‘By the end of this book you will never sleep peacefully again’.

For Liz and Bill Rich, two people trying to rebuild their lives, the house symbolized a new beginning, a haven in an enchanted landscape. But within weeks of their arrival, the enchantment turned to horror, and their blessed home became a malevolent prison.

Footsteps thundered along empty landing, apparitions inhabited deserted rooms; posessions flew, furniture moved. Bill’s business collapsed; his son retreated into a blood-red hell, uttering demonic curses in a rasping, guttural, alien voice. the house consumed enough electricity for an office block.

This is a true account of what one family, and those around them, saw and heard and experienced.

Read it – and decide what you believe…

Clarke, Roger (2012): A Natural History of Ghosts – 500 Years of Hunting for Proof. London: Penguin.

“Is there anybody out there?” However rational we think we are, few of us are completely immune to the idea of ghosts. What explains spectral sightings? Why do we fear the supernatural? Why are some people or cultures more likely to experience hauntings than others? And what proof is there? Growing up in a haunted house, Roger Clarke spent much of his childhood trying to see a ghost. From the terrifying true events behind Henry James’s The Turn of the Screw and the frenzy of the Cock Lane poltergeist to ghoul-hunting flash-mobs and sexually-charged Victorian sèances, he takes us on a journey of belief with ghosts of every kind.

Clarkson, Michael (2006): Poltergeists. Examining Mysteries of the Paranormal. Richmond Hill: Firefly Books.

At least 35 police officers around the world claim to have witnessed some form of poltergeist activity. One officer even pulled his weapon on an “unseen force”. A legitimate sighting of a paranormal phenomenon? Just a nervous cop? You be the judge. There are numerous cases of “hauntings” studied throughout the world every year, many of which hold up under close scrutiny. Examples include: * An 11-year-old boy inhabited by a poltergeist who causes still photographs to become moving pictures and raises a chair with a police officer sitting on it. * The famous Tina Resch case: a 14-year-old girl appears to make glasses float off shelves, move tables and send telephones flying with the power of her anger; * The Hogdson family who are terrorized by flying Lego pieces that are hot to the touch and furniture that moves of its own accord; 11-year-old Virginia Campbell, who seems to cause heavy furniture to move at home and desks to float at school, all in 28-day cycles; * A 12-year-old Kentucky boy who, subconsciously, moves heavy objects in the presence of two parapsychologists watching him closely for signs of trickery. Clarkson interviewed hundreds of witnesses, paranormal experts, psychologists, professors, magicians and skeptics to conduct his investigations. Raising as many questions as it answers, this is a fascinating study of the paranormal.

Estep, Richard & Bungay, Bill (2019): The Black Monk of Pontefract – The World’s most violent and relentless Poltergeist. Keine Ortsangabe: unabhängig veröffentlicht.

“When an object materialises out of thin air before your very eyes – you write a book.” England. The late 1960s. In the town of Pontefract, the house at number 30 East Drive is about to become the scene to one of the most infamous poltergeist cases the world has ever seen. When co-author and former sceptic Bil Bungay bought the house in order to promote a movie, he had no idea that a powerful, terrifying, entity – one capable of defying the laws of physics – was still very much in residence. This book provides first-hand eyewitness testimonies and reams of recent evidence to make the case that the house is indeed home to extraordinary paranormal phenomena, and then asks the question: Just what the heck is a poltergeist, anyway?

Fraser, John (2020): Poltergeist – A new Investigation into Destructive Haunting. Hampshire (UK): 6th Books.

There are few factual books written about poltergeist phenomena, John’s Fraser’s Poltergeist! A New Investigation Into Destructive Haunting fills that void, advancing and updating Colin Wilson’s work Poltergeist!, this study’s namesake from over 38 years ago. Fraser takes readers on a journey from the Borley Rectory to the Isle of Man, and grounds his readers in an historical overview of ‘Poltergeist phenomena’. He examines where such events overlap with other paranormal investigations of ‘apparitional’ ghosts. What do they have in common, what do they differ? To answer this, Fraser looks to new research on paranormal events, never before published in book form. Fraser contends, perhaps controversially, that ghost sightings are and always will be ambiguous and near-impossible to prove, that only Poltergeist phenomena can be empirically verified.

Fraser, John (2023): One Big Box of ‘Paranormal Tricks’? From Ghosts to Poltergeists to the Theory of Just One Paranormal Power. London: CollectiveInk.

In his latest book, One Big Box of ‘Paranormal Tricks’?, John Fraser reflects on his motivations for involvement in paranormal research from an early age, recalling his experiences to date, the people who have influenced him, and the conclusions he’s come to. Whilst Fraser refers to events in his life, this book is not a memoir or ‘life story’ in any conventional sense. It’s presented as a mediation on what the paranormal might mean for us in our universal quest to give our lives meaning. One Big Box of ‘Paranormal Tricks’? takes more of a zen-&-the-art-of-spending-a-night-in-a-haunted-house approach than an autobiographical one.

Gauld, Alan & Cornell, A.D. (2018): Poltergeists. Hove (UK): White Crow Books.

Poltergeists was first published in 1979 and rapidly established itself as a leading work on the topic. It has been frequently referred to as groundbreaking and a classic of the genre. Illustrative cases from all over the world are presented, dating from the sixteenth century to the late twentieth. Included are destructive cases, fantastical cases, poltergeist assaults, phenomena that are allegedly brought about by a witch or a demon, and others which appear to be the handiwork of a deceased human being. Most cases are sourced from contemporary notes or diaries, often little known or unknown but nevertheless fascinating, with many translated from non-English language sources. The book includes a computer analysis of the leading characteristics of hundreds of cases of poltergeists and hauntings, and offers tentative conclusions as to the natural ‘clusters’ into which the cases fall. Poltergeists is essential reading for anyone who is interested in parapsychology and the paranormal.

Glazier, Jacob W. (2023): Paranormal Ruptures, Critical Approaches to Exceptional Experiences. Keine Ortsangabe: Beyond the Fray Publishing.

The paranormal is more than just scary. It threatens our normal perceptions of reality and cuts to the core of human experience. This book and each individual chapter, in its own unique way, make this case by bringing together scientific research and scholarship from cultural and critical studies. Indeed, if the paranormal terrifies you even a little bit, imagine the impact on society if some of these exceptional experiences turn out to be true. Truth, as we will see, is often times stranger than fiction and is not so easily assured in our modern world of advancing technology and social change. Often relegated to myths or tall tales, the paranormal is rather already here among us, summoning and sometimes bedeviling us to reconsider our usual ways of understanding. This book is an invitation to just such a journey.

Henderson, Jan-Andrew (2001): The Ghost That Haunted Itself. Edinburgh, Mainstream Publishing.

Greyfriar’s Cemetery in Edinburgh has a centuries old reputation for being haunted. Its gruesome history includes bodysnatching, witchcraft, headstone removal, desecration, corpse dumping, live burial and use as a mass prison. In 1998 something new and inexplicable began occurring in the graveyard. Visitors encountered ‘cold spots’, strange smells and banging noises. They found themselves overcome by nausea, or cut and bruised by something they could not see. Over the space of three years, more than a hundred people were knocked unconscious. Homes next to the graveyard wall became plagued by crockery smashing, objects moving and unidentified laughter. Witnesses to these events ran into the hundreds. There were two exorcisms of the area. Both failed. The section of Greyfriar’s where the attacks occur is now chained shut. The entity responsible has been named the ‘Mackenzie Poltergeist”. It has become one of the best-documented and most conclusive paranormal cases in history. This is the story.

Hitchings, Shirley & Clark, James (2013): The Poltergeist Prince of London – The Remarkable True Story Of The Battersea Poltergeist. Stroud (UK): The History Press.

It began with a key. One afternoon in 1956, in the home of the Hitchings family in Battersea, south London, a small silver key appeared on Shirley Hitching’s bed. This seemingly insignificant event heralded the beginning of one of the most terrifying, incredible and mysterious hauntings in British history. The spirit, who quickly became known as ‘Donald’ began to communicate, initially via tapping sounds, but over time – and with the encouragement of psychical researcher Harold Chibbett, whose case files appear here – by learning to write. Soon, the spirit had begun to make simply incredible claims about his identity, insisting that he was one of the most famous figures in world history – but what was the truth? Here, for the first time, is the full story, told by the woman right at the heart of it all – Shirley herself.

978-0-7524-9803-4

Empfehlenswert.

Holder, Geoff (2013): Poltergeist over Scotland. Stroud (UK): The History Press.

“Everything was in motion and flying in all directions through the house…” Aberdeenshire, 1822. In 1945 the celebrated psi-researcher Harry Price published Poltergeist Over England, popularising the word poltergeist (German for ‘noisy ghost’) and making famous the kind of physical haunting characterised by thrown objects, mysterious noises, and damage by fire or water. Now, for the first time, an astonishing array of historical Scottish poltergeist cases are gathered together, from the 1600s to the modern period – unaerthing many episodes that have remained neglected for centuries. Some were no doubt hoaxes, but in others, multiple witnesses testified to disturbing events enacted over months. Whatever the true causes of the events, 500 years of historical evidence from Scotland suggests that poltergeist phenomena are undoubtedly real.

Houran, James & Lange, Rense (2007): Hauntings and Poltergeists – Multidisciplinary Perspectives. Jefferson: McFarland & Company Inc.

Few people can claim the distinction of experiencing first-hand such occurrences as hauntings and the presence of poltergeists, but countless numbers of people are fascinated by these unexplainable events. Written by the world’s most knowledgeable authorities in this field, the essays in this work promote a better understanding of the manifestations of and various reasons for hauntings and poltergeist phenomena. The experts come from such backgrounds as anthropology, history, philosophy, psychiatry, and sociology, and provide sober yet highly readable in-depth discussions of numerous ideas and rationalizations for hauntings and poltergeists, from a critical and scientific perspective. Divided into three major sections—sociocultural, physical and physiological, and psychological perspectives—this work provides an overview of each perspective and also addresses the general psychology of belief in the paranormal and how that belief relates to experiences with ghosts and poltergeists.

Josiffe, Christopher (2017): GEF! The Strange Tale of an Extra-Special Talking Mongoose. London: Strange Attractor Press.

During the mid-1930s, British and overseas newspapers were full of incredible stories about Gef, a “talking mongoose” or “man-weasel” who had appeared in the home of the Irvings, a farming family in a remote district of the Isle of Man. The creature was said to have the ability to talk in several languages, to sing, to steal objects from nearby farms and to eavesdrop on local people. Despite written reports, magazine articles, books, several photographs, fur samples and paw prints, voluminous correspondence and signed witness statements, there is still no concensus as to what was really happening to the Irving family. Was it a hoax? Mental illness? A poltergeist? Bizarre, entertaining and schorlarly, this book is the result of seven years of research, interviews and site visits, and includes many previously unseen photographs and archival materials. Now, for the first time in 70 years, you can read all of the evidence and decide for yourself.

Lathye, Brian & Houran, James & Dagnall, Neil & Drinkwater, Kenneth & O’Keefee, Ciáran (2022): Ghosted! Exploring the Haunting Reality of Paranormal Encounters. Jefferson: McFarland & Company Inc.

Reports of paranormal experiences vary tremendously, but are often associated with ghosts, haunted houses, and otherwise eerie circumstances. There exist both classic and modern texts on ghosts and haunted or possessed people, places and spaces; many discuss traditional ideas regarding such phenomena or utilize now-outdated research in highly academic and technical ways. This book offers a very different approach in reviews provided by a leading-edge research program devoted to who has ghostly experiences and why. With new insights both global in scale and multidisciplinary in scope, this collaboration by five researchers uncovers consistent evidence that anomalous experiences represent a very real “Haunted People Syndrome”–a term describing anomalous experiences that manifest recurrently to the same percipients and are interpreted as “ghostly”–with implications for future research across academia. The participation of new citizen scientists (the field investigators and researchers among us) is invited in furthering the exploration of paranormal mysteries. Photos and figures illustrating concepts and models are included, as is a glossary.

Lecouteux, Claude (2012): The Secret History Of Poltergeists And Haunted Houses. From Pagan Folklore to Modern Manifestations. Rochester: Inner Traditions.

Stories of poltergeists and their mischievous and sometimes violent actions – knocking, stone or chair throwing, moving objects with invisible hands, and slamming or opening doors – are a constant through the ages. What changes is how we interpret this activity. For our pagan ancestors poltergeists were seen as helper spirits whose negative manifestations revealed their unhappiness with a household. The medieval Christian church demonized these once helpful spirits and held exorcisms to expel them from the houses they haunted – which proved effective less than half the time. The Age of Enlightenment cast these incidents as clever hoaxes, and many still believe this today. But poltergeist manifestations continue to appear and often defy attempts to debunk them as pranks. What then is behind this phenomenon? Exploring accounts of poltergeists from ancient Greece and Rome, medieval Europe, and the modern world, Claude Lecouteux finds that while our interpretations of poltergeists may change, the manifestations always follow a similar course and evolution. He shows how modern scientific studies of poltergeist manifestations have found a strong tie between these visitations and the presence of a troubled adoloscent in the house. Looking beneath the Christian adulteration of pagan practices to reveal the hidden ancestral beliefs tied to poltergeists and haunted houses, the author shows how these unhappy spirits serve as confirmation of the supernatural beings that share the earth wirh us and our relationship with the natural and unseen world, a relationship we must take care to keep in balance.

In 1928, Erix and Mabel Smith took over a lonely parish on the northern border of Essex. In the rectory, Mrs Smith made a gruesome discovery: a human skull. Soon the house was electric with ghosts. Within the year, the Smiths had abandoned it and Borley Rectory became notorious as the ‘most haunted house in England’. When Reverend Lionel Foyster moved in he experienced a further explosion of poltergeist activity with an increasing violence directed at his young wife. Marianne, passionate and sensuous, isolated in a village haunted by ancient superstition and deep-rooted prejudice, would be accused not only of faking the ghosts but of adultery, bigamy – and even murder. Sensationally reported in the tabloid press, the haunting gripped the nation. The case would establish self-made ‘psychic detective’ Harry Price as the most celebrated ghost hunter of the age. Two hundred people bearing witness to some 2,000 supernatural incidents surely confirmed that not only did ghosts exist, but, finally, here was proof of life after death. With the tension of a thriller and the uncanny chills of a classic ghost story, Sean O’Connor brings the story of Borley Rectory to vivid life as an allegory for an age fraught with anxiety, haunted by the shadow of the Great War and terrified of the apocalypse to come.

Empfehlenswert.

Ostrzychka, Anna & Rymuszko, Marek (2023): The Elusive Force – A Remarkable Case of Poltergeist Activity and Psychokinetic Power. Charlottesville: Anomalistic Books.

A unique case of paranormal abilities. In the spring of 1983, a thirteen-year-old Polish schoolgirl named Joasia Gajewski suddenly began to exhibit astounding paranormal abilities (often beyond her conscious control) that mystified and frightened the people around her. The inexplicable, often destructive psychokinetic effects she randomly generated (even in her sleep!) met with disbelief, exasperation, and superstitious feat. Attempts by local authorities to ascribe these puzzling events to physical causes (settling of walls, geopathic anomalies, etc.) proved superficial and unsatisfactory. Eventually Joasia’s plight caught the attention of several courageous, open-minded Polish scientists. Over a period of forty months, they administered tests and conducted numerous experiments with her under controlled laboratoy conditions. Their detailled studies, though ultimately inconclusive, did succeed in confirming the girl’s remarkable powers, which she continued to manifest long after the end of puberty – a singular case in the annals od parapsychology.

Pickering, Andrew (2025): The Rise of the English Poltergeist. I know what I heard and saw. Gloucester: The Hobnob Press.

I know what I heard and saw! It is 1650. and something is very wrong in your house. Pots and pans are flying through the air. Invisible hands are pelting your family with stones. Doors slam shut on their own, and strange knockings echo through the walls at all hours. Your neighbours whisper about demons, your servants flee in terror, and you don’t know where to turn. Welcome to the world of the early modern poltergeist.
While tales of witches and witchcraft have been closely scrutinised by scholars, the mischievous spirits that tormented ordinary households have remained largely overlooked. This groundbreaking study brings together and examines twenty-seven extraordinary cases from 1591 to 1718, drawn from contemporary accounts, and retold as vivid ‘Relations’ in the style of seventeenth-century demonologies.

Playfair, Guy Lyon (2011): This House is Haunted – The amazing inside story of the Enfield Poltergeist. Hove (UK): White Crow Books.

This is the Amazing Story of the Enfield Poltergeist On August 31st 1977, normal life ended for Mrs Harper and her four children in their modest council house in a hitherto quiet corner of the north London suburb of Enfield. Compared to what was to come, the initial phenomena were relatively minor – knockings on the walls, and pieces of furniture moving in ways that did not seem normal. The neighbours came in and searched the house, finding all in order, though they too heard the knocking. The police were called, and were able to witness a chair sliding along the floor. The disturbances went on, getting more intense and more frightening. They were eventually witnessed by at least thirty people. They included examples of everything a poltergeist can do – overturning chairs and tables, flinging things about, whipping off bedclothes, levitating one of the girls in full view of passers-by, making her speak with the voice of an old man and defying the laws of physics by passing matter through solid matter. Much of this bewildering and often terrifying activity was captured on tape and film by Maurice Grosse of the Society for Psychical Research and his colleague Guy Lyon Playfair, who were on the case within days of its outbreak stayed on it until it finally came to an end, with a twist as unexpected and surprising as in any detective story. No other case of its kind has been so well witnessed from start to finish or so thoroughly documented. Incidents are described as they happened, without embellishment, from some six hundred pages of transcripts of live tape recordings. The story of the Enfield poltergeist is already regarded as a classic in the annals of psychical research. It has been the subject of worldwide press coverage and several radio and television documentaries.

Empfehlenswert.

Price, Harry (1994): Poltergeist. Tales of the Supernatural. Rickmansworth: Senate Publishing.

A poltergeist is a ghostly imp with certain unpleasant characteristics. Whereas the ordinary ghost is, usually, fairly quiet and discreet, the poltergeist is the reverse. According to many reports from around the world, the poltergeist is michievous, destructive, noisy, cruel, cunning, malicious, audacious, teasing, ill-disposed, spiteful, ruthless, and resourceful. Not a good testimonial to be sure. This delightful history of the poltergeist phenomenon covers a wide range of investigation. As well as describing his own and his friends’ personal experiences, the author has extracted selected cases from old and rare works on the subject. From Battersea to Barbados, these fascinating accounts will enthral both the student of the supernatural and the general reader.

Ritson, Darren W. (2020): The South Shields Poltergeist. Stroud: The History Press.

One of the most significant cases in the last fifty years, the South Shields poltergeist is a true and terrifying account detailing a family’s brave fight against an invisible intruder. This intense, protracted and well-documented encounter spanning 2005-06 is said to be one of the best cases of its kind, and is certain to go down in the annals of psychical research. Objects moved on their own, carving knives were thrown around, coins appeared in mid-air before being thrown to the floor, sinister text messages were sent by the poltergeist, apparitions were seen, and a number of physical assaults took place on one unfortunate householder. Now, fifteen years on, this new and updated edition includes the original case review, which was first published in the ‘Journal of the Society for Psychical Research’ in 2010. It contains a preface by Alan Murdie, and a new chapter that was originally omitted from previous editions. Based on the testimonies of those who experienced it first hand, the South Shields poltergeist is a chilling reminder that reality is not what we think it is.

Robinson, Malcolm (2020): The Sauchie Poltergeist. Keine Ortsangabe: unabhängig veröffentlicht.

This is undoubtedly the biggest poltergeist case of its kind in Scotland, (if not the United Kingdom) Not only were the poltergeist events witnessed in the family household, but they also followed the unfortunate little girl to her local school, where the poltergeist was equally disruptive in full view of Virginia’s classmates and teacher. The credibility of the witnesses to these bizarre events consisted of two local doctors, a local minister, and a number of other Church of Scotland Ministers, each of whom were stunned to view the astonishing events in the Campbell household.Researcher Malcolm Robinson takes a look back at this impressive 1960 case, and his re-investigation of it. Malcolm managed to track down some of the witnesses, and their impressive testimony is included in this block buster of a book.Dr Nisbet. The Campbell’s Local G.P was quoted as saying,“Virginia is not responsible for what has happened. The child is innocent. What has taken place was not conjured by the child herself, an outside agent is responsible. Believe me, something unfortunate has been going on in that house. The girl was hysterical all the time the phenomenon was appearing”.Dr. A.R.G. Owen, Mathematician and psychical researcher, stated,“In my opinion the Sauchie case must be regarded as establishing beyond all reasonable doubt the objective reality of some poltergeist phenomena”.Whilst the Reverend T.W. Lund stated,“It was a very humbling experience and I felt we were in the presence of forces hitherto almost unknown, that we were just on the edge of a more or less uncharted ocean, that was my own feeling”.A frightening tale, of one of Scotland’s biggest ever poltergeist outbreaks.

Rogo, D. Scott (1986): On the Track of the Poltergeist. Charlottesville: Anomalistic Books.

There is no mystery greater than that posed by the poltergeist. The ‘noisy ghosts’ of legend and folklore represent some of the most complex phenomena known to – but generally ignored by – science. Psychological research indicates that poltergeists focus on unhappy families who tend to repress and sublimate massive amounts of inner aggression and anger. This anger tends to build within the mind of one of the familiy members until it explodes outward in the form of the poltergeist. But is that the whole answer? ON THE TRACK OF THE POLTERGEIST is D. Scott Rogo’s autobiographical account of his search to witness and document these rare phenomena. Backed by this experience and research, he is able to present a critical reevalation of what we think we know about the poltergeist. Rogo also explains how to respond when confronted with a poltergeist outbreak and how to carry out field investigations of the phenomenon.

Schoch, Robert M. & Yonavjak, Logan (2008): The Parapsychology Revolution – A concise Anthology of Paranormal and Psychical Research. Los Angeles: Tarcher Perigree.

Grounded in scientific acumen and constructive inquiry, this anthology shines a rare, clarifying light on the controversial realms of psychical and paranormal research, collecting key reports, essays, and arguments from more than a century of investigation into matters such as clairvoyance, telepathy, and poltergeist activity. Studies in the modern laboratory, employing rigorous methodology and peer-reviewed oversight, have conclusively detected statistical anomalies suggesting the presence of some not yet understood faculty of the human mind. In The Parapsychology Revolution, Robert M. Schoch, Ph.D. – a scholar widely known for his geological theories, that question the conventional dating of the Great Sphinx – and researcher Logan Yonavjak introduce and athologize core writings that underscore the range and continuing challenges of psychical research. Serious in tone and intent, The Parapsychology Revolution provides a thorough documentary overview of the inception and present-day state of this fascinating and important field of research. The book’s intensive introduction and the editors’ commentary on individual essays and sections highlight milestones, feuds, and leading players that mark the nascent history of paranormal and psychical investigation. Special notice is taken of episodes of fraud and their troubling persistence in the field. The authors examine the work of reputable scholars such as Ian Stevenson, William James, and J.B. Rhine, who did so much to legitimatize the study of the paranormal. Finally, The Parapsychology Revolution addresses and clarifies the all-important question: Is there legitimate evidence for a world beyond the ordinary?

Tucker, S.D. (2020): Blithe Spirits. An imaginative history of the Poltergeist. Stroud: Amberley Books.

The Trickster-god is a strange and rather wonderful mythological figure who is found in folklore and legend right across the world, from the Norse Loki to the Greek Hermes to the Raven and Coyote of the Native American people. The ultimate ‘cunning fool’, he and the many subversive tales told about him have been studied down the years by anthropologists, historians, literary theorists and psychologists from Ted Hughes to C.G. Jung. But in the twenty-first century, should be the Trickster also be studied by parapsychologists and ghost hunters? Nobody believes in gods like Hermes or Loki anymore, but that does not mean that people do not still tell one another tales about such Tricksters and their mischievous ways. They do, but in disguised form – the disguised form of the poltergeist. Belief in Trickster-gods, this book argues, has today been transformed into popular belief in Trickster-ghosts, with those noisy, disruptive, roguish spirits known as poltergeists fulfilling largely the same imaginative function as more traditional Trickster-figures like Robin Goodfellow once did. By playing childish trucks upon us, poltergeists appear to reveal our current world-view to be in some way incomplete, breaking the accepted circles of ‘official’ materialistic, scientific logic and provoking laughter at their irreverent audacity in doing so. Rather than being itended to frighten, perhaps the true purpose of certain ghost stories is in fact to amuse, perplex and provoke? Whether true or not, such ghost stories still function as genuine Trickster-myths, providing those who read them with access to a hidden realm lurking somewhere just beyond the rational, in which the usual rules of science, logic and reality simply do not apply. Perhaps in doing so they act as a kind of ’emotional safety-valve’, intended to allow mankind temporary respite from the sometimes oppressive social forces surrounding us. Covering a wide global selection of reported poltergeist phenomena from ancient times right up to the present day, and then subjecting them to a process of literary, historical and sociological analyses, Blithe Spirits is one of the most unusual, original and wide-ranging books about the subject ever to be written.

Dass Poltergeister nun also sog.

Wilson, Colin (1988): Beyond the Occult. Twenty years’ research into the paranormal. London: Watkins Publishing.

In Beyond the Occult, Colin Wilson puts forward a convincing case that our so-called ‘normal’ experience may, in fact, be subnormal, and that evolution may have brought us close to a quantum leap into a hugely expanded human consciousness. Almost two decades after writing his magistrial The Occult, Coliln Wilson re-examined the whole spectrum of the mystical and paranormal and produced a general theory of the occult that remains as compelling as the evidence for atomic particles. Originally published in 1988, Beyond the Occult highlighted the huge amount of new evidence and material that had come to light following publication of The Occult. It combines scientific thinking on the nature of physical reality with a wide range of fascinating case studies, from the Swiss dowser who located the body of a missing woman, to the lucky American whose dreams foretold the winning horses in multiple races, to scores of accounts of mystical experiences of the Divine, of spirit possession and of poltergeists. This new edition includes a foreword by Colin Wilson’s bibliographer, Colin Stanley.

Young, Robert (2021): Apparitions, Hauntings And Poltergeists. Nottinghamshire: The British Ghost Society.

Does human consciousness survive death? Can it manifest itself to the living? And can science study alleged paranormal phenomena? In Apparitions, Hauntings and Poltergeists, Dr Robert Young provides an accessible and informative introduction to the science of Parapsychology, drawing on years of study and first-hand experience as an investigator of paranormal phenomena. This book makes public the case files of The British Ghost Society, an organisation founded and led by Dr Young which has conducted investigations at many of Britain’s allegedly haunted buildings, with dramatic and thought-provoking results. Alongside case studies of classic cases of haunting, apparitions and poltergeist phenomena, Dr Young reveals the true stories behind famous ghost movies, from The Exorcist to The Conjuring, and asks: are paranormal phenomena really evidence of disembodied souls, or are they manifestations of as yet unexplained powers of the human mind itself?

The world’s most famous demonologists, Ed and Lorraine Warren, were called in to help an average American family who were being assaulted by forces too awesome, too powerful, too dark, to be stopped. Their harrowing encounter with otherwordldy evil – supported by dozens of eyewitnesses including neighbors, priests, police, journalists, and researchers – makes for one of the Warrens’ most gripping accounts… and one of the most terrifying true tales of the supernatural. The grim slaughhterhouse odors. The defeaning pounding. The hoofed half-man charging down the hall. Physical attacks, a vivious strangling, failed exorcisms, a succubus… and the final terror that continued to torment the Smurl family.

Alles, was eine echte Dokumentation völlig unmöglich macht.

How can we make intelligent decisions about our increasingly technology-driven lives if we don’t understand the difference between the myths of pseudoscience, New Age thinking, and fundamentalist zealotry and the testable hypotheses of science? Casting a wide net through history and culture, Sagen examines and authoritatively debunks such celebrated fallacies as witchcraft, faith healings, demons, and UFOs. And yet, disturbingly, in today’s so-called information age, pseudoscience is burgeoning, with stories of alien abduction, “channeling” past lives, and communal hallucinations commanding growing attention and respect. As Sagan demonstrates with lucid eloquence, the siren song of unreason is not just a cultural wrong turn but a dangerous plunge into darkness that threatens our most basic freedoms.

Taylor, Troy (2021): The Devil came to St. Louis. The True Story of the 1949 Exorcism. Jacksonville: American Hauntings Ink.

The full story can finally be told!! The 1949 exorcism that took place in St. Louis, Missouri, has become one of the greatest unsolved mysteries in American history. But is the story so mysterious because of the events that occured – or because so much of the story has been kept secret over tthe years? After the events in the story concluded, it was decided that further investigation of the case was “counterproductive”, and details were buried. The identity of the allegedly possessed boy was hidden to protect his identity. If not for a series of coincidences, the story would have never likely been revealed at all and would never have inspired books, films, documentaries, and more. Author Troy Taylor has spent more than zwo decades researching the facts behind this chilling story – searching through old records, visiting the sites that still exist, and interviewing the surviving witnesses to the strange events. But even when he published his first book on the case in 2006, it was nearly impossible to seperate fact from fiction because so much of the story had been purposely hidden. He had also made a promise that he would not reveal the identity of the family – or that of the boy at the center of it – as long as he was living. This book is the result of a promise that he sadly no longer needs to keep. In this updated and uncensored edition of his acclaimed book, he reveals the complete truth for the very first time, uncovering secret details, stories that have never been told, and a full accounting of a story that goes far beyond anything you’ve ever heard before. Read new interviews, never-before-published details, and chilling accounts – and then decide for yourself from this new evidence what you choose to believe – or not believe – about the time when the devil came to St. Louis!

Parsons, Steven T. (2015): Ghostology – The Art of Ghost Hunter. Hove (UK): White Crow Books.

Ghostology is simply the study of Ghosts. It is not ghost hunting, neither is it is parapsychology. The study of ghosts – Ghostology, is not trying to capture apparitions on camera, although that is sometimes a part of it. It is not trying to record the sounds and the voices of the deceased or of spirits, although that too is a part of it. Ghostology is the holistic study of a fascinating aspect of our humanity, a shared human experience that dates back to the earliest civilisations and is common to all of them. Ghostology is not a “How to guide” for those seeking to investigate ghosts but it provides an up to date consideration and a discussion of the many methods and techniques that will prove helpful to anyone interested in the subject, for those who actively seek ghosts or who are merely interested in discovering more about this fascinating subject.

Stambaugh, Chad (2013): Paranormal investigations. The proper procedures and protocols of investigation for the beginner to the pro. New York City: iUniverse.

The phenomena of ghosts and hauntings are very real experiences that more and more people are encountering every day. It is their true cause and nature that is the ongoing mystery. In Paranormal Investigations, author Chad Stambough discusses the process of trying to find that one piece of evidence that could prove, without a doubt, that ghosts are real. Paranormal Investigations shows both the beginner and the professional when and how to correctly operate the different types of equipment integral to a paranormal investigation – cameras, camcorders, voice recorders, digital video recorders, EMF detectors, dowsing rods, pendulums, and more. In addition, Chad breaks down, step by step, the correct procedures for conducting both, public and private investigations, including how to deal with clients, what to look for, how to look for it, and how to document an investigation. Through this detailed guide, Chad works toward creating paranormal unity among those who research the events of phenomena that science can’t or won’t explain.

Auerbach, Lloyd (2016): ESP, Hauntings and Poltergeists – A Parapsychologist’s Handbook. Scotts Valley: Create Space Independing Platform.

This is a 30th Anniversary reprinting of a book that has been lauded by Newsweek and cited by numerous people — from students of parapsychology to ghost hunters to celebrity paranormal investigators — as the book that got them first interested and started on their paranormal journeys and studies. ESP, Hauntings and Poltergeists, first published in 1986, is reprinted with minor changes and minimal updates [Note that the authors subsequent books have much of the update material already]. Writing the book during the height of the (now-defunct) accredited Master’s degree program at John F. Kennedy University in the San Francisco Bay Area, parapsychologist Loyd Auerbach put together a true handbook for those interested in all forms of psychic phenomena and experiences, with a eye towards investigation of the paranormal (apparitions, hauntings and poltergeists). The material is presented in four sections with appendices. Section One is a “handbook” providing basic foundation knowledge of parapsychology and psychical research, psychic phenomena and experiences, and even the skeptical viewpoint. Section Two takes a look at Pop Culture — from TV and film to science fiction and comic books — and news and reality TV coverage of the topics. Section Three is a casebook of sorts, covering famous cases of hauntings (including an expose of the Amityville Horror case) as well as cases investigated by some of Auerbach’s colleagues (and his own very first case). Section Four is the handbook for the would-be paranormal investigator / ghost hunter. It’s a step by step manual that contradicts so much of what has been altered by television producers for reality TV. Coming from the 100+ years of field investigation of the paranormal by his predecessors, colleagues, and his own experience, this common sense guide will enable people to truly investigate, understand, and generally resolve ghostly issues. Honest and direct, even if you think you know how to investigate, this section alone will enlighten you in ways you may not have imagined. Finally, the Appendices provide resources for any and all interested in the topics covered by the book. There are tools for the investigator in Appendix A. Appendix B provides an updated (2016) list of organizations and resources, a “Who Ya Gonna Call?” directory, as well as the questions you should ask to make sure the ghost hunters or parapsychologists you contact actually are trained or educated and know what they’re talking about (and know what they’re doing). Additional suggestions for furthering your education in Parapsychology and the paranormal is included in this section. Appendix C provides a long list of suggested reading materials. There have been a few additional more recent titles added to this appendix (2016) as a starting point for the 21st century. Once you read this book, you’ll have a real understanding of what the real scientific researchers and investigators have been doing since the 19th century start of the field, how the best investigations are conducted, what parapsychologists generally think of apparitions, hauntings, and poltergeists, and so much more!

Charman, Robert A. (2023): The Psi Mind in Action. Exploring the powers of the Human Mind Beyond the Brain. Hove (UK): White Crow Books.

“The Psi Mind in Action” explores the extraordinary powers of the human mind in interacting with the physical world. In replicated experiments on mice with normally fatal cancer tumours, the mice that were given healing fully recovered and lived a healthy life. Studies on Group Transcendental Meditation have shown a reduction in local crime rates and increased feelings of well-being in the community, despite the community being unaware of the meditation activity. Acoustic analysis of wall-rapping sounds made by a ‘poltergeist’ linked to the mental activity of a young woman were found to have different waveforms from normal physical rapping on the same surface. A stolen harp was successfully located by map dowsing from 1800 miles away.

French, Chris (2024): The Science of Weird Shit – Why our minds conjure the paranormal. Cambridge: MIT-Press.

Ghostly encounters, alien abduction, reincarnation, talking to the dead, UFO sightings, inexplicable coincidences, out-of-body and near death experiences. Are these legitimate phenomena? If not, how should we go about understanding them? In this fascinating book, Chris French investigates paranormal claims to discover what lurks behind this “weird shit”. French provides authoritative, evidence-based explanations for a wide range of superficially mysterious phenomena, and then goes further to draw out lessons with wider applications to many other aspects of modern society where critical thinking is urgently needed. Using academic, comprehensive, logical and, at times, mathematical approaches, The Science of Weird Shit convincingly debunks ESP, communicating with the dead, and alien abduction claims, among other phenomena. All the while, however, French maintains that our belief in such phenomena is neither ridiculous, nor trivial; if anything, such claims can tell us a great deal about the human mind if we pay them the attention they are due. Filled with light-bulb moments and a healthy dose of levity, The Science of Weird Shit is a clever, memorable, and gratifying read you won’t soon forget.

Henry, Jane (2005): Parapsychology – Research on Exceptional Experiences. London: Routledge.

Psychic and other “exceptional” experiences are surprisingly common but opinions as to their cause very widely. Can tricks of the mind such as hallucinations, mistaken perception and errors of judgement explain such phenomena or does some yet to be understood non-sensory means of communication come into play? In Parapsychology, leading researchers from both the UK and the USA combine their expertise to offer a lucid account of research into the science of psychic experience. Beginning with an introduction to the methodology employed, Parapsychology addresses topics such as coincidence, telepathy, precognition, psychokinesis, healing, apparitions, reincarnation and out-of-body experiences. Each chapter describes the phenomenon, outlines the main lines of research and discusses the merits of various possible explanations for such anomolous experiences. Extensive suggestions for relevant further reading on each individual subject are provided, along with a detailed glossary of terms. Parapsychology provides an accessible and succinct overview of the research and current thinking on the subject of psychic and allied experiences. This balanced account of work in this fascinating area will be of great interest to students and researchers in psychology as well as anyone with an interest in the field.

Mayer, Gerhard (2019): N equals 1 – Single Case Studies in Anomalistics. Zürich: LIT Verlag.

Single case studies have a long tradition in the field of parapsychology and anomalistics research. Naturally, thorough case studies do not usually provide hard evidence for the existence of paranormal effects. However, they demonstrate the dynamics of occurence of such extraordinary phenomena and experiences in the living world. This volume is intended to give an overview of the methodogical peculiarities of anomalistic field research. On the basis of historical and current case studies, certain specific psychosocial dynamics and problems in this interesting and challenging field of research are presented and discussed.
